Dr. Sergio Huerta is board-certified in both Internal Medicine and Addiction Medicine. His leadership, clinical practice, and research focus on improving treatment and systems of care for individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD).
From 2018 to 2024, he served as Medical Director for multiple MedMark Opioid Treatment Programs throughout New Mexico. In December 2024, he was appointed Chief Medical Officer for the Western Region of BayMark Health Services’ Opioid Treatment Program Division.
In this role, Dr. Huerta oversees addiction medicine services across multiple states, leads the development and implementation of evidence-based clinical policies, and directs quality improvement initiatives that expand access to treatment and improve patient outcomes. This work advances BayMark’s commitment to providing safe, effective, and compassionate care for people with OUD.
Dr. Huerta earned a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology from New Mexico State University and his medical degree from the University of New Mexico School of Medicine, where he also completed his Internal Medicine residency and serves as an Associate Professor of Internal Medicine.
Dr. Huerta has served as an investigator on multiple NIH-funded multicenter clinical trials and holds leadership roles in national addiction medicine organizations, contributing to the development of national evidence-based guidelines for OUD treatment.
