The experienced and compassionate staff at BAART Van Ness is ready to help patients overcome their opioid use disorder, whether they are taking prescription pills like OxyContin and Hydrocodone or are using illicit opioids such as heroin or fentanyl. Each patient is treated with dignity and respect from the moment they enter the clinic’s doors and will receive an individualized treatment plan that includes a variety of services offered at BAART. A whole-patient approach is used in order to address all the difficulties associated with addiction, so in addition to MAT and counseling, referrals to community resources are also provided as needed.
Medication-Assisted Treatment at BAART
The most effective treatment available for those looking to overcome opioid use disorder is with the assistance of medications called methadone, or buprenorphine which is known most commonly as Suboxone ®. MAT allows those who have taken high doses of opioids daily to stave off withdrawal symptoms which can be painful and hard on the body. These medications are dispensed daily at the clinic, and the dosages are monitored by a medical provider to ensure a therapeutic dose is reached. The goal for each patient is to remove the physical elements of addition to allow the patient to address the causes and consequences of addiction. When appropriate, the provider will ramp down the body’s dependence on the medications and discontinue their use. This process looks different for each patient based on the history of their use and individual goals for recovery.
Methadone Treatment in the Fresno, CA Area
Methadone maintenance has been proven a successful method of treating opioid addiction for almost 50 years. Many people who are addicted to opioids are unable to stop on their own usually due to the awful experience of withdrawal. This pain also causes some to use more and more of the drug, introducing their body to larger doses to ward off the worst of the effects. Unlike many opioids, methadone is a “full agonist” opioid with a much longer half-life. This simply means that its effects are fully felt, but last longer, allowing a single therapeutic dose to reduce withdrawal symptoms for 24 – 36 hours.
With this form of treatment, patients are required to visit the methadone clinic daily where they will receive their dose under the medical supervision of staff members. These daily visits are an important step for those just beginning their treatment as they tend to hold patients accountable for their recovery progress and create much needed structure. After some time, privileges may be earned, and patients may be allowed to take the medication home with them to dispense daily without having to take a trip to the clinic.
