Methadone Treatment in Southeast Los Angeles, CA

Methadone has successfully been treating substance use disorders for almost 50 years since it was first tested as a treatment option for opioid use disorder, or more commonly opioid addiction. This medicine allows those who are addicted to opioids to taper their dosage and prevent painful and prolonged withdrawal symptoms while being monitored by medical professionals. The most common methadone regimen can reduce withdrawal symptoms within 24 to 36 hours per treatment.

Misconceptions about methadone include the myth that patients become “addicted” to the treatment or that they are replacing one drug with another. Methadone has a much longer half-life which is why a therapeutic dose will minimize withdrawal symptoms for 24 to 36 hours, but does not make a patient feel “high” or euphoric. Doctors who prescribe MAT at the clinic will work make sure that all those who are receiving methadone maintenance are given the proper dosage that their bodies need, and if appropriate to that persons treatment plan, can begin to slowly lower their dosage until they can stop taking the medication all together.

Daily visits to the methadone clinic for MAT treatment help people in the early phases of treatment stick to a structured schedule that holds them accountable for their recovery process. After showing commitment to the MAT program, patients are then able to earn the privilege of taking medicine home to follow state and federal guidelines of dispensing doses to themselves without having to come to the clinic daily.

Counseling as Part of the MAT Program

Treating the chemical side of addiction without addressing the mental and behavioral end will leave a patient unbalanced. Addiction is a disease, which means that it takes more than stopping the act of drug misuse to treat it. At our BAART facilities, patients work with experienced guidance counselors and receive opioid use disorder therapy that will help them work their way to long-lasting recovery. These counselors delve into emotional aspects and underlying traumas that can fuel addictive behaviors, as well as co-occurring mental health issues. Those who continue to seek counseling through their treatment and recovery process are more likely to avoid relapse and are able to stick with sobriety more than those who do not.
