Buprenorphine and Suboxone® Treatment Program

BAART Porterville, a REACH Grant participant, offers buprenorphine and buprenorphine compounds such as Suboxone® for the treatment of opioid addiction. Approved in 2002 by the FDA, these medications offer the same benefits of methadone, but offer patients flexibility in choosing the medication that works best for them. Buprenorphine and Suboxone® are offered in clinic as well as by prescription. The program that works best for each patent will be determined by their medical provider at intake.

Medication-Assisted Treatment Clinic at BAART Porterville, CA

This BAART facility specializes in MAT or medication-assisted treatment of opioid use disorder. Methadone has been the gold standard of treatment for opioid addiction since it’s FDA approval for this purpose more than 50 years ago. Methadone is a full agonists opioid which can significantly reduce the painful withdrawal symptoms of opioid misuse for 24 to 36 hours, particularly in patients who have been taking high doses of prescription or illicit opioids such as heroin.

Patients work closely with their counselor and medical provider to create a treatment plan to address their specific needs and goals for treatment. The length of each person’s program is different, but many studies show that patients who are in an MAT program for at least a year experience greater success in long-term recovery. Methadone maintenance requires patients to come into the methadone clinic every day for their dose, holding them accountable for their treatment goals. However, after some time; many patients are able to earn the privilege of taking multiple days’ worth of medication home.

Naltrexone/Vivitrol® Treatment Program

In 2010, naltrexone, also known by the brand name Vivitrol®, was approved to treat opioid use disorder. It had previously been approved for the treatment of alcohol use disorder but was found to have clinical application for both disorders and is becoming more widely used as an alternative to daily medications.

Individual and Group Counseling Services

With medication addressing the physical side of opioid addiction, BAART also focuses on the other side of substance use disorders that concerns mental and behavioral health. Patients at Porterville will meet with licensed counselors in a safe space to discuss previous trauma or factors that have affected them, potentially fueling their drug use. Counselors also work with patients to set goals, learning healthy coping mechanisms and build back their damaged relationships.

Group counseling sessions offer patients an opportunity to connect with peers. Group sessions are a great way to share successes, troubles, and future goals in a comfortable and judgment-free zone. Many patients find it encouraging hearing from others who can empathize with their struggles and journey.
