Los Angeles, CA Methadone Treatment

Methadone has been a successful method for treating opioid use disorders for almost 50 years since it was first tested as a treatment option for opioid addiction. This medicine is a “full agonist” opioid, which means that it has a much longer half-life than other opioids making its effects last much longer. This means that people taking methadone are able to stave off the painful withdrawal symptoms that that often lead them to continue to use opioids in the past. Once a patient receives their therapeutic dosage of methadone, the effects can last up to 24-36 hours per dose. With this program, patients are required to visit the clinic every day for their methadone dose, which also adds an element of structure that can be beneficial to keep them committed to their treatment progress. After some time, privileges may be earned, and medical providers may allow patients to take their medication home.

Everyone’s treatment plan will be different, some patients can gradually reduce their dosage of methadone, and some choose to eventually discontinue the medication altogether. However, each patient’s medical provider will work to set goals that are in line with their progress and unique needs. There is also a 21-day outpatient methadone detoxification program available where patients can detox safely and comfortably under the watchful eye of medical staff to ensure all their needs are being met.

Individual Counseling at BAART Lynwood

While methadone treats the physical and chemical aspects of substance use disorder, the counselors at BAART aim to work with patients to touch on the mental and behavioral aspects of their addiction. Licensed counselors sit with patients and discuss their past and current mental health, touching on any possible trauma that may have led them to their misuse of opioids. Discussing these matters in a judgment-free zone can be beneficial for patients who may feel isolated due to their addiction. Counselors also work with patients to construct goals, learn and enact healthy coping techniques, and rebuild their lives.
