The BAART Approach to Medication-Assisted Treatment
At BAART St. Johnsbury we offer MAT utilizing both methadone, buprenorphine or Suboxone® and Vivitrol®.
Methadone is an opioid that has been used in the treatment of opioid addiction for more than 50 years. As a full opioid agonist, it is effective in addressing opioid withdrawal symptoms, offering hope to patients who have used very high doses of illicit heroin and fentanyl in addition to other prescription opioid drugs. When used in conjunction with counseling and supportive recovery services, Methadone is the gold standard of opioid addiction treatment. A therapeutic dose of methadone helps patients control withdrawal symptoms as well as cravings and daily visits to our methadone treatment clinic provide much needed structure in early recovery from opioid addiction.
Since being approved for clinical use in 2002, buprenorphine has been shown to be extremely effective in the treatment of opioid addiction. As a partial opioid agonist, it offers the same withdrawal symptom relief, but with a ceiling effect that minimizes its potential for misuse. Buprenorphine and buprenorphine compounds, most commonly known as Suboxone®, is offered in the clinic by prescription. The treatment program and specific medication which is right for each patient will be recommended by a medical provider in collaboration with the patient and their counselor.
Each patient’s medication, dose and progress are medically supervised, making MAT a safe, effective and customizable option for addiction treatment.
Counseling & BAART MAT
In addition to MAT, BAART also assists patients address the psychological challenges of addiction. Treatment plans are developed and tailored to your individual requirements by our team of experienced counselors. Counselors work with their patients determining their underlying triggers for addiction and how best to address them. Counselors will also aid in developing healthy coping mechanisms, strategies for re-establishing a strong social support structure and setting goals for short and long-term recovery. They are a safe place to receive the support and accountability needed during recovery.

In a group setting, patients can share their experiences with others who have had similar experiences in a comfortable and judgment-free setting.
